In Memory of Edmond Hakin

Edmond came to us two years ago after a major stroke.  His right arm and leg were paralyzed and he had lost his speech.  His neck and core muscles had become very weak after so much time spent in hospital beds.

He loved horses.  At one point in his life he had seven of them: two geldings, one stallion, two mares, and two foals from one of his mares.  At Giant Steps, Edmond  rode Scarlet, a "wonderful and loving little mare," - and his daughter, Sylvie saw improvements in her father.  "We saw him smile again and regain strength in his neck and core.  Even his speech improved a little and he was able to guide Scarlet with his left hand."

His instructor, Julie, says, “Edmond was an inspiration to everyone who worked with him at Giant Steps.  Everyone loved Thursdays and working with Edmond.  Despite pain and the lack of cooperation from his body, he rode Scarlet every week.  He tolerated assistance in mounting from the instructors and volunteers, always with kind eyes and a gentle smile.

Once he was centered on Scarlet’s back he would sigh, grin from ear to ear, and ask her to walk on.  Even without verbal language or the use of his right side, Edmond was able to ask Scarlet to “walk on” and “whoa,” and he steered her all around the arena.  As he rode his tight muscles loosened.  Edmond, an experienced horseman, must have been frustrated to have support while riding but he never let it show.  Over time, his balance improved and he grew stronger.  He was once again riding with no support. He was truly at peace on his horse’s back.

There was an amazing feeling of camaraderie between Edmond and those who worked with him.  He delighted in listening to their stories and laughing at their attempts to speak French.  The best part of the day, though, was when the ride was over and Edmond spoiled his beloved Scarlet with the carrots that he never let his wife, Janine, forget to bring.  He watched Scarlet intently, smiled, and laughed as she voraciously, but gently, took the carrots from his hand.  Experiencing his joy was therapy for everyone.  Thursdays will never be the same.”

"The biggest joy in Edmond's last couple of years was to go to Giant Steps.  Thank you Giant Steps for your wonderful program and staff.  Keep up the good work and may many support your program!"
