It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our founders, Robert Pope and Lee Justice. Robert and Lee founded Giant Steps in 1998 after realizing that the Tennessee Walker horses they were breeding would serve as perfect therapy animals. They bought a piece of property on I Street in Petaluma, put together a Board of Directors, found funding and this legacy began. Read about them here.

With our current arena in constant use we dreamt of a second arena to continue to grow our therapeutic riding program and to offer other equine assisted therapies, such as equine assisted psychotherapy and hippotherapy.

At our Gala in 2010, we made a plea for seed money for a new arena. A generous donor, Peggy Furth, stepped up and made a donation. Since then, we have been working on raising the rest of the funds to build it. At our most recent Golf Tournament, sponsored by Barclays, we conducted a Fund-a-Need paddle raise specifically asking to fund this new arena. In as little as 10 minutes, the participants in the room came together and donated enough money for us to make this dream a reality.

Now that we have the new arena we wonder how we got along without it.  We use it for horse turnout (the horses love to run, play and roll in it), private lessons, leading lessons and orientations. Because of the new programming and the new arena, we can now serve more participants than ever. Thank you to all the donors who contributed to make this happen!
